After the ending of the first book, BETWEEN HATE AND DESIRE, I knew we were in for one heck of a ride with this second one, and Brooke Fox did not disappoint. Oh my, what Sophia went through was rough to read about, especially if you have been in a DA situation, as I have. Although I do not find this triggering, some may, so please check the TW/CW before reading. Sophie and Mason’s story will have you feeling all the feels, so be warned, you will need LOTS and LOTS of tissues and a tall glass of ice water to get through this book.
That being said, I absolutely LOVED this book. While my heart went out to Sophie for everything that she was going through, and man, it was a lot, my heart broke for Mason. This guy, my goodness, the things that he was put through during the course of this book were heartbreaking. He was first friends with Sophie, and slowly he began to fall for her, but he couldn’t do anything about it for a myriad of reasons. But that wasn’t all; he also had a d’bag of a father, among other things. Believe me when I tell you, you’ll be rooting for these two from the very beginning, but wondering how they will get there with all the obstacles that keep getting in their way.
I cannot stress enough that this series needs to be read in the order in which it has been released. Each book focuses on one couple, but they follow three sisters and three friends, and the stories intwine with one another, so while this story is Sophie and Mason’s, we saw how parts of it started in the prior book. That book had a cliffhanger, just as this one did to begin the following books.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy Contemporary Romances with some Dark elements. Friends to Lovers romances, Close Proximity Romances, Roommate Romances, Slow Burn Romances, or Found Family Romances.
