4.5 Love Story Stars
Romeo and Juliet is a story I'm sure we all know; the great William Shakespeare wrote this tragic play hundreds of years ago, and it has been retold in many different ways. BURNING DAYLIGHT is Emily McInitre's retelling of Romeo and Juliet, and it's definitely one of my favorite R&J retellings.
Roman Montgomery, aka Ry, hasn't had an easy life. He lives with his mother and sister in California, where he does everything possible to ensure his sister's well-being. He's a dead guy living a secret life, that is, until his father asks him to return to Rosebrook Falls and start learning the family business, one that his father didn't want him to be a part of when he knocked on his door a few years earlier. So what has changed? The only good thing about his return is that he will see his little rose again.
Juliette Calloway lives a privileged life; her family is wealthy and very powerful. They are the family that owns most of Rosebrook Falls, and her parents want more, no matter the price. Juliette is also the only girl and the youngest, so she has three overprotective big brothers, something she hates and loves in equal measures.
Juliette and Roman have a chance meeting, and you can feel the connection as keenly as they do. I love the way Emily gave them little meetings outside of realizing who they actually are and what it means; it gave them the chance to have something solid to stand on before everything tumbled down around them. Because being in rival families, how can it not be a shit storm?
This story has a lot of heart, heat, and angst, and I was here for all of it. While this book was about Roman and Juliette, and they did get their HEA, there is a larger story arc that will run through all the books in the series, which I am looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. I will have to be patient, though; Book Two isn't scheduled to release until Summer 2026.
I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook version of this book, thanks to an advanced copy provided by Dreamscape Media and Netgalley. It's narrated by Andi Arndt and Aaron Shedlock, and they did a fabulous job bringing Roman and Juliette's story to life. If you enjoy listening to audiobooks, I recommend this one.
